About Mahakaleshwar Temple

Mahakaleshwar is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, on the banks of the Shipra River in Ujjain. It is the only Jyotirlinga that faces south (Dakshinamukhi), which is why it holds special importance. It is famous worldwide for the Bhasma Aarti, the early-morning ritual where the deity is worshipped with sacred ash. The Mahakal Lok corridor connects the temple to Rudra Sagar with sculptures and murals from Shiva Purana stories.
